Lizabeth Scott

She may not have the recognition and super-stardom as some of her contemporaries, but I have enjoyed the films of Lizabeth Scott while working on this series.

She started as a model and a Broadway actress. After a few near-misses with Hollywood, she finally got her first film in 1945 and had a nice string of successes for about 12 years before stepping away. She worked with Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas (twice), Burt Lancaster (twice), Charlton Heston, Barbara Stanwyck, and Mary Astor.

I think my favorite film of hers was “Too Late for Tears”. She and her husband are driving at night and a ransom payment is mistakenly thrown into their car. $60,000. In 1949, that’s a lot of cheddar. Her husband wants to turn it in to the police but she’s got dreams of a fancy life. I don’t want to spoil it, but it’s a film noir, so let’s just say it doesn’t end well.

The dress in this drawing is what she wore in “I Walk Alone”. I guess it stuck with me.
