Considered by many to be the most beautiful woman ever in film (hard to argue), Ms. Lamarr was more than just a pretty face. She held a patent for a frequency-hopping radio system (based on a design by none other than Nikola Tesla) that was adopted by the US Navy in 1959 to control torpedoes after launch. This technology became the basis of WiFi, Bluetooth and other secure telecommunications. Unfortunately, her patent had expired by then and she was never compensated for her innovation.

For all you comic book nerds (raises hand), she was the inspiration for Bob Kane and Bill Finger when they created the character of Catwoman, first appearing in Batman #1 (1940).
